under the new moon
down the hill and around our acre
in view of the ocean
on the land the deer pass through
whom you (mighty hunter) safely growled at
through our window.

you slipped away in a distant city
or we would have had a body to bury
but maybe this is better
calcified chunks of green and black
dusting the forest floor
sandy grit on scrub grass and baby pines
hands turning gray with these remains of you
oh paltry remains

how we loved you
how we miss you
the tears we shed now
are nothing to the joy
we gave each other
